Luke Wenke’s mental health has long been the focus of speculation and scrutiny by both the court and among members of the public. I’m watching what I say right now because I suspect that certain parties involved in Wenke’s current case are going to use anything they can to scapegoat my website.

Long story short, I never supported mental health treatment as an alternative to incarceration for Luke Wenke. I knew it would be a waste of resources, time, and effort because he denies being mentally ill and there’s no reason to believe he’ll have an “aha” moment anytime soon.

One of the biggest indicators that treatment would be futile — aside from the fact that Wenke’s own public defenders conceded that this was a possibility (and maybe even a likelihood) — is Wenke’s piss-poor attitude toward any programs he’s been required to participate in. In addition to showing what probation described as “surface compliance” at best, Wenke routinely complained about his court-mandated counseling sessions and mocked the programs.

I also thought it was a really bad idea to mandate Luke Wenke to certain programs because they take place in a group setting and he airs literally everyone’s business in a very public fashion. Divulging what someone said while in a vulnerable state can easily become life-ruining for that person, and I hope any future decisions regarding Wenke’s treatment are made with other clients in mind.
